News Updates for August 24-30, 2023

Library Card Sign Up Month – it’s almost here! Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. A library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available. Stay tuned for how you can participate with Tolono Public Library. Remember we offer free Card for Kids to any child in Unit 7 schools.

Programs and Events This Week

STEM Explorers: Lava Lamps / Thursday, August 24th, 4:00—5:30 p.m. Stop by the Library and build and decorate your own lava lamp! We’ll also learn about density and molecules. Recommended Ages: 6-11.

Upcoming Fall Programs

The Library is ready for fall with some new programs starting in September. To kick things off, we are resuming the Page Turners Book Club. On the first Saturday of each month at 2:00 p.m., adults can join other readers at the Library to discuss a novel. No registration is necessary. For September 2nd, we are talking about “Killers of the Flower Moon: the Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. Light refreshments are provided.

Next up, we have STEAMers – a science and art group for little ones ages 0-5. From 10:30-11 a.m. September 6, then every other Wednesday, put on your thinking cap at the Library for activities full of science, learning, and fun!

For the after-school crowd, we have a LEGO Club for ages 6-11. Come and build a creative LEGO design from 3:30-5:00 p.m. every other Wednesday beginning September 6th.

Finally, we have a makerspace one Saturday per month starting September 9th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Bring your designs to life in The IDEA Zone where we have materials and equipment for your use, including a Cricut, 3D Printer, sewing machine, button maker, and craft supplies. Use our materials or bring your own! Anyone ages 8 and up can participate.

For our upcoming kids’ crafts, we are collecting paper towel rolls and empty 2-liter plastic bottles. Please drop off any materials at the front desk in the Library.
