News for February 26-March 4, 2026

For many, you may not have realized that the library has an extensive green space to the south of our building, and it is very underutilized.  Together with the Friends of the Tolono Library and Boy Scout Andrew Berkey, the Tolono Public Library is planning the construction and maintenance of a Community Garden.  This garden will be open to the public; anyone would be welcome to volunteer to plant, maintain, and harvest produce throughout the year.  It will also include flower gardens, to beautify the area and provide pollination, a picnic table, and a brick pathway.

To raise funds for the start-up of the garden, the Friends of the Tolono Library will be selling the bricks that will be used for the pathway.  Bricks are $5 apiece, and those who purchase a brick, will be able to add their name and decoration to their brick. Bricks will be available for purchase throughout the month of March, but if you purchase them on or before March 3rd, you can decorate them at the library with our supplies.  The Friends group will then seal the bricks before laying them in the garden on March 28th.  Your name and artwork would be a part of our garden for years to come. Questions or to volunteer to help build/plant the garden, should be directed to the Friends of the Tolono Library at friends@tolonolibrary.org

Other events happening this week include an Uno Tournament on Thursday, February 26 from 4:00-5:30, a special Dr. Seuss story time on Monday, March 2nd from 10:00-11:00AM to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Week, LKBC, also on Monday, from 5:30-6:30PM, and Coffee Talk on Wednesday, March 4th which will feature Vanessa Jones, the program coordinator for the University of Illinois Extension’s Family and Consumer Science (FCS) program, who will be discussing making choices that you can feel good about when packing a lunch on the go instead of just grabbing some fast food.
